The First Day
Orthodontic management of cleft lip
and palate patients
About The First Day
- Individuals with cleft lip and palate are faced with many challenges, including a high prevalence of malocclusions.
- Altered craniofacial growth is one of the contributing factors to the development of malocclusions, and frequent tooth agenesis is another.
- Knowledge of these issues can help the cleft orthodontist, along with a multidisciplinary team, manage these cases more appropriately.
- The orthodontic management in individuals with cleft lip and palate may, in some cases, start soon after birth with neonatal orthopaedics, continue with maxillary expansion preceding alveolar bone grafting, and terminate with a phase of comprehensive orthodontic treatment, which may be combined with orthognathic surgery.

Gregory Antonarakis, Your Host
- Gregory Antonarakis completed his degree in dentistry at the University of Wales in Cardiff, UK, and his orthodontic specialty training at the University of Geneva, Switzerland.
- He subsequently received his PhD from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and undertook clinical fellowship training in cleft and craniofacial orthodontics at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.
- Currently working in the division of orthodontics at the University of Geneva, his interests include cleft and craniofacial orthodontics, and orthodontics for individuals with special needs
The Second Day
Management of transverse discrepancy
in orthodontic patients
About The Second Day
- Managing the transverse maxillary dimension is the most critical aspect of high-quality orthodontic treatment and also plays a vital role in orthodontic stability.
- If left untreated, the maxillary transverse discrepancy with or without posterior crossbite increases the risk of developing facial asymmetries and TMJ dysfunction.
- It could contribute to the development of Obstructive sleep apnea.
- During this course, we will present Clinical situations in children and adult cases where changing the maxillary Transverse dimension is an essential aspect of the treatment plan.
- In this course, we will review the biomechanics advantages and disadvantages of each appliance used for expanding the maxillary dimension taking into consideration both design and technique.
